Birds in the Summer

While summertime is hot for us humans, can you imagine how it feels to your pet bird—covered with feathers? Learn how to keep your bird cool during the hottest months of the year.

Almost everyone who owns a dog or cat knows that during the summer, their pets will shed their winter coats. However, what do birds do? Surely they must get really hot with all of those feathers! Learn how to help your feathery friend keep cool!

  • With the extreme temperatures of the summer, it can be very easy to overheat a bird if there is no shade. If your pet’s cage is in direct sunlight, either move the cage or be sure that there is a shady spot.
  • Keep fresh drinking water available for your bird all the time. But this is especially important during the hottest months of the year. Not only will your pet use the water for drinking, but it could also take a cool bath! For the hottest days, you can even put a few ice cubes in the water to make it extra cool.
  • If you prefer to keep the air conditioning off during the day, be sure that air is being circulated in some way near your pet. This can be from an open window, or you can get a fan for your bird’s cage. This is very important if the temperature in your home gets to 85 degrees or higher. Ask your veterinarian if the fan should blow directly on the bird, or just stir up a breeze by reflecting the air onto a wall.

For other ideas or suggestions, talk with your veterinarian or local pet store. Everyone likes to stay cool in the summer, even the birds!
